Christian or pagan – the Origin of Valentine’s Day ?

cupid-3cExploring the Pagan roots of the Valentine’s Day holiday.

“When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee . . . . thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations . . . for because of these abominations the LORD (Jehovah, Yehuwah) thy God doth drive them out from before thee !”
Deuteronomy 18:9-12

“After the doings (ways) of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do . . .and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do; neither shall ye walk in their ordinances . . . . Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you.     And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants . . . !”     Leviticus 18:1-26

—————–

Regardless of race and religion, almost every couple in the world celebrates Valentine’s Day. In fact, it is considered the second widely celebrated event after the Christmas or Yuletide Season. Only a few people know that Valentine’s Day is originally a Catholic celebration. But there are even fewer individuals who know its earlier pagan roots.

faunus-godsThe Darkness of Valentine’s Day and its Pagan Origins

Valentine’s Day originated from the pagan festival Lupercalia which is a celebration of fertility and purification. Lupercalia is named after Lupercus, the god of fertility and hunter of wolves in Roman mythology. It’s a 3-day event that runs from the 13th to 15th of February. But before our current Gregorian calendar, the festivity usually falls on spring season.

The month of February is also associated with Lupercalia. Part of the rituals held during the festivities is the Februa, Februatio or Februare which literally means purification. Februa is a purification ritual performed to drive away evil spirits in the entire city or community and to ensure fertility for the spring or planting season.

An old Roman and pagan activity observed during Lupercalia is the love lottery. In this tradition, young men are paired with women through a simple lottery system. Names of all participating females shall be placed in a jar after which, each male shall draw or pick a name that will be temporarily paired with him. The pairs will act as lovers or partners for the entire duration of the festival. This tradition was carried by the ancient Romans overseas as their empire grew.

Another notable activity is the gathering of ancient Luperci priests at Pallupercalia-valentineatine Hills or the boundaries of the ancient city of Rome. This tradition persisted up to the time of Julius Caesar wherein the Master of the Luperci College of Priest during that period was Mark Anthony.

During the 1st and 2nd century, the Christian or Catholic religion started to grow. Much of the Pagan cultures and traditions were also assimilated and reinvented to fit the Catholic tradition and to attract early pagans to become Christians. In 496 A.D., then Pope Gelasius declared the Lupercalia traditions particularly the love lottery as immoral. The Pope changed the love lottery tradition into a saint lottery where each young boy tries to mimic the qualities of the saint he picks all throughout the year. Pope Gelasius also declared February 14 as the feast of Saint Valentine, the patron of lovers.

The story (legend) of Saint Valentine.   Valentine was a young priest that lived during Emperor Claudius’ reign. In his desire to perform his Christian duties of administering wedding ceremonies and aiding prisoners, he disobeyed the orders of the emperor. For Claudius, men should serve the Roman army first before getting married. For this reason, Valentine was incarcerated and sentenced to death. Based on historical accounts, Valentine was regularly visited by his jailer’s blind daughter whom he later fell in love with. Before Valentine’s execution, he wrote her a note and ending it with the phrase “From Your Valentine.”

One of the [supposed] miracles of (attributed to) Saint Valentine was the healing of that girl’s eyesight. This has also resulted to his jailer’s change of faith. Valentine’s letter to his beloved girl is considered to be the earliest Valentine’s Day card. And it’s only during the 17th century when Valentine’s Day cards were commercialized, mass produced and prefabricated.

note:   We encourage every reader to remember, that we must always share the Truth in love. A good way to begin is by offering to those we truly love, a better alternative to these ancient pagan practices, adopted by the Roman Catholic Church.  And give to your wife or husband an invitation to spend the afternoon or evening with you on another day, and such gifts as which will not pass away . . . . your life offered in the daily sacrifice of all selfish desires on their behalf.    In such a way which honours the LORD (Jehovah, Yehuwah) our God, and our Saviour Jesus Christ.

“And I heard another voice from heaven saying . . . . Come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the LORD . . . that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins (Babylon’s) have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities . . . !”

An Undivided Heart ?

The powerful testimony of a woman in search of God –

Are we merely content with a “form of godliness,” and yet do not see the power thereof in our own lives?   As we hear those words echoed Today, which were asked of the multitudes who followed our Lord and Saviour, saying . . . . “Master, what must we do, so that we also might work the works of God?”   John 6:28

And to all, the answer has remained the same . . . .”My son, My daughter, give Me thine heart . . . !”   Proverbs 23:26   Are we truly willing to obtain by experience that one thing which is absolutely necessary to gain entrance to the Kingdom of God . . . to be begotten again through union with Him ?

It is our prayer that this woman’s testimony will both encourage and be a blessing to all that hear.   May our LORD and Saviour both bless and keep you !

Simple Living (active) Faith ?

rainbow 2a    “Believe that Jesus meets with you (and dwells within you . . . because He has promised); believe that He is willing to bless you. Turn the eye away from self (your own weakness). Look unto Jesus, talk of His matchless love. By beholding Him you will become changed into His likeness. When you pray, be brief, come right to the point. Do not preach the Lord a sermon in your long prayers. Ask for the Bread of Life (His Spirit-filled promises – John 6:27-50) as a hungry child asks bread of his earthly father. God will bestow upon us every needed blessing if we ask Him in simplicity and faith.”
– Counsels to the Church, p.294

“True faith lays hold of and claims the promised Blessing before it is realized and felt. We must send up our petitions in faith within the second veil and let our faith take hold of the promised blessing and claim it as ours (Galatians 3:14). We are then to believe that we receive the blessing, because our faith has hold of it, and according to the Word it is ours. “What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them !”
Mark 11:24 and Hebrews 11:1-6

Here is faith, naked faith, to believe that we receive the blessing (the promise spoken), even before we realize it. When the promised blessing is realized and enjoyed, faith is swallowed up. But many suppose they have much faith when sharing largely of the Holy Spirit and that they cannot have faith unless they feel the power of the Spirit. Swallpaper-2995113uch confound faith with the blessing that comes through faith. The very time to exercise faith is when we feel destitute of the Spirit.

When thick clouds of darkness seem to hover over the mind, then is the time to let living (active) faith pierce the darkness and scatter the clouds. True faith rests on the promises contained in the Word of God, and those only who obey that Word can claim its glorious promises. If ye abide in Me, and My Words . . . which are Spirit and Life . . . abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you !” John 15:7 and 6:63.

“Whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.” 1 John 3:22.      We should be much in secret prayer. Christ is the Vine, ye (we) are the branches. And if we would grow and flourish, we must continually draw sap and nourishment from the Living Vine (John 15:1-7); for separated from the Vine we have no strength !

I asked the angel why there was no more faith and power in Israel. He said, “Ye let go of the arm of the Lord too soon. Press your petitions to the throne, and hold on by strong faith (Matthew 11:12 and Luke 18:3-8). The promises are sure. Believe ye Guardian Angelreceive the things ye ask for, and ye shall have them.” Mark 11:24

I was then pointed to Elijah. He was subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly. His faith endured the trial. Seven times he prayed before the LORD, and at last the cloud was seen.      I saw that we had doubted the sure promises, and wounded the Saviour by our lack of faith. Said the angel, “Gird the armor about thee, and above all take the shield of faith; for that will guard the heart, the very life, from the fiery darts (lies – John 8:44) of the wicked.”

If the enemy can lead the desponding to take their eyes off from Jesus, and look to themselves, and dwell upon their own unworthiness, instead of dwelling upon the worthiness (merits, righteousness) of Jesus as our Substitute and Surety, His love, His merits, and His great mercy, he will get away their shield of faith and gain his object; they will be exposed to his fiery temptations. The weak should therefore look to Jesus, and believe in Him (the Word of Almighty God); they then exercise (step forward, and walk out in) faith . . .”

Our Trial by Fire ?

The Path (Way) of Life ?

bethesda     “My son, My daughter . . . . attend to My Words, yea, incline thine ear to My sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes, keep them in the midst of thine heart . . . For they are Life unto those that find them (John 6:63), and health to all their flesh !”
– Proverbs 4:20-22

“The Saviour in His miracles revealed the power that is continually at work in man’s behalf, to sustain and to heal him . . . Sickness, suffering, and death are work of an antagonistic power. Satan is the destroyer; but God is (our) the Restorer . . . !

The Words spoken to Israel are true today of those who recover health of body or health of soul. “I Am the LORD (Jehovah, Yehuwah) that healeth thee !” Exodus 15:26.

The desire of God for every human being is expressed in the Words, “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” 3 John 2.  He it is Whoforgiveth all thine iniquities; Who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; Who crowneth thee with loving-kindness and tender mercies !” Psalm 103:3-4

When Christ healed disease, He warned many of the afflicted ones, “Sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.” John 5:14. Thus He taught that they had brought disease upon themselves by transgressing the laws of God (Theos – Deity, divinity), and that health could be preserved only by obedience.

The physician should teach his patients that they are to cooperate with God in the work of restoration. The physician has a continually increasing realization of the fact that disease is the result of sin. He knows that the laws of nature, as truly as the precepts of the Decalogue, are divine, and that only in obedience to them can health be recovered or preserved. He sees many suffering as the result of hurtful practices who might be restored to health if they would do what they might for their own restoration. They need to be taught that every practice which destroys the physical, mental, or spiritual energies is sin, and that health is to be secured through obedience to the laws fruits-veggies-3that God has established for the good of all mankind.

When a physician sees a patient suffering from disease caused by improper eating and drinking or other wrong habits, yet neglects to tell him of this, he is doing his fellow being an injury. Drunkards, maniacs, those who are given over to licentiousness* (immoral thoughts and practices), all appeal to the physician to declare clearly and distinctly that suffering results from sin. Those who understand the principles of life should be in earnest in striving to counteract the causes of disease. Seeing the continual conflict with pain, laboring constantly to alleviate suffering, how can the physician hold his peace? Is he benevolent and merciful if he does not teach strict temperance as a remedy for disease?fruits-vegetables-fresh-2

Let it be made plain that the way (path) of God’s commandments is the Way of Life. God has established the laws of nature, but His laws are not arbitrary exactions. Every “Thou shalt not,” whether in physical or in moral law, implies a promise. If we obey it, blessing will attend our steps. God never forces us to do right, but He seeks to save us from the evil and lead us to the good.

Let attention be called to the laws that were taught to Israel. God gave them definite instruction in regard to their habits of life. He made known to them the laws relating to both physical and spiritual well-being; and on condition of obedience He assured them . . .

The LORD will take away from thee all sickness.” Deuteronomy 7:15. “Set your hearts unto all the Words which I testify among you this day.” “For they are Life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.” Deuteronomy 32:46; Proverbs 4:22.

God desires us to reach the standard of perfection made possible for us by the gift of Christ. He calls upon us to make our choice on the right side, to connect with heavenly agencies, to adopt principles that will restore in us the divine image. In His written Word and in the great book of nature He has revealed the principles of Life. It is our work to obtain a knowledge of these principles, and by obedience to co-operate with Him in restoring health to the body as well as to the soul.

bread-barleynote:
The physical life is to be carefully educated, cultivated, and developed, that through men and women the divine nature may be revealed in its fullness. Both the physical and the mental powers, with the affections, are to be so trained that they can reach the highest efficiency.

That perfection* of character which the Lord requires is the fitting up of the whole being as a temple for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. God will accept of nothing less than the service of the entire human organism.

It is not enough to bring into action certain parts of the living machinery. All parts must work in perfect harmony, or the service will be deficient. It is thus that man is qualified to co-operate with God in representing Christ to the world. Thus God desires to prepare a people to stand before Him pure and holy, that He may introduce them into the society of heavenly angels.

Perfection of character cannot be attained when the laws of nature are disregarded; for this is transgression of the law of God (Theos – deity, divinity). His law is written by His own finger upon every nerve, every muscle, every fiber of our being, upon every faculty which has been intrusted to man. These gifts are bestowed, not to be abused and corrupted, but to be used to His honor and glory in the uplifting of humanity. { Review & Herald, November 12, 1901}

Men need to learn that the blessings of obedience, in their fullness, can be theirs only as they receive the grace* (G5485 = Divine Influence) of Christ. It is His grace that gives man power to obey the laws of God. It is this that enables him to break the bondage of evil habit. This is the only power that can make him and keep him steadfast in the right path . . . !”

So Great Salvation – a Closer Look at Daniel 9:24 in Light of Calvary !

“For thus saith the LORD (Jehovah, Yehuwah) that created the heavens, God Himself that formed the earth . . . (ref: Psalm 33:6-9 and Genesis 1:1 thru 2:3) I have not spoken in secret, in some dark place of the earth, Yea, I said not unto the seed (children) of Jacob, Seek ye Me in vain . . . for I the LORD that speak righteousness . . . yea, I Am mighty to SAVE . . . !” Isaiah 45:11-19 and 63:1

“God, Who at sundry times and in diverse manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, by Whom also He made the worlds . . . How shall we escape, if we neglect (are carless, make light of) so great Salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard Him . . . ?”
Hebrews 1:1-3 and 2:3

“The same power that Christ exercised when He walked visibly among men is in His Word. It was by His Word that Jesus healed disease and cast out demons; by His Word He stilled the sea and raised the dead, and the people bore witness that His Word was with power. He spoke the Word of God, as He had spoken to all the prophets and teachers of the Old Testament. The whole Bible is a manifestation of Christ.

The Scriptures are to be received as God’s Word (Voice) to us, not written merely, but spoken . . . . When the afflicted ones came to Christ, He beheld not only those who asked for help, but all who throughout the ages should come to Him in like need and with like faith. When He said to the paralytic, “Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee;” when He said to the woman of Capernaum, “Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace,” He spoke to every other afflicted, sin-burdened ones who should seek His help. Matthew 9:2; Luke 8:48.

So with all the promises of God’s Word. In them He is speaking to us individually, speaking as directly as if we could listen to His Voice. It is in these promises that Christ communicates to us His grace* (G5485) and power. They are leaves from that Tree which is “for the healing of the nations.” Revelation 22:2.
